Russian Timber Journal 03-2023: Pavel Kunin, Commercial Director at Doza-Gran: “From the financial and time perspective, a wood pellet line is the most lucrative kind of investment associated with recycling sawmilling waste”; in 2022, the volume of roundwood export from Russia dropped by almost 4 times, down to 3.5 million m³ — Russia has never exported so little unprocessed timber in its contemporary history; the President of Russia approved a list of assignments as a follow-up to a meeting on the issues of the Russian timber industry development that took place on February 10, 2023; total plywood production capacity in China is expected to approach 210 million m³ per year by the end of 2023; the Ministry of Industry and Trade received a proposal from the Association of Furniture and Woodworking Enterprises of Russia to increase import duties on wooden and cushioned furniture and mattresses from Europe from 8.5-12% to 50%; ADEO, owner of the DIY franchise Leroy Merlin, intends to hand over the governance of the Russian company to the local management team; a subcommission of the governmental commission on foreign investment control allowed International Paper to sell 50% of shares in Ilim SA, a Swiss group, which, in its turn, owns 96.37% of Ilim Group; problems with export from the Tomsk Region to Asian countries force large local companies to suspend production; Russian plywood output grew by 21% in February 2023 compared to the previous month, reaching 245,000 m³; Segezha Group closed the deal on selling Segezha Packaging, the enterprise that produces paper packaging in Europe; based on the 2022 performance, Russia reduced its export of wood and articles of wood (HS Code 44) by 24.3% YoY, down to $8.975 billion.
