Sawn softwood market in Russia 05-2021: prices continue to grow worldwide, but it seems that the preconditions for maintaining the previous growth rates have been exhausted

14 June 2021 ` 16:39

In May 2021, all world sawn timber markets were still experiencing a strong imbalance with a significant excess of the demand over the supply and low stocks. This was mainly conditioned by the stimulating measures to support the construction industry adopted by the governments of China, Europe, and the United States to fight the consequences of COVID-19.

Thus, banks lowered rates on mortgage loans, and thus households obtained direct monetary support aimed at increasing the consumption, in particular, in the field of construction that consumes up to 70% of sawn timber.

A slowdown in the growth of sawn timber prices was also registered on some world markets in May 2021. It seems that the fundamental preconditions for further growth at the previous rates have been exhausted, and prices have almost reached the highest level acceptable for end consumers.
