WhatWood: overstocking led to reduction of prices for Russian timber in Egypt
Overstocking of the port of Alexandria with large volumes of sawn timber in June led to price cuts in the Egyptian market, as the representatives of large exporting sawmills in the European part of Russia told WhatWood.
After a peak of $320, rates on CIF Alexandria stabilized around $300, and in the last two weeks have been decreasing to $280-290.
Egypt is the third Russian importer of sawn timber after China and Uzbekistan. Russian pine timber of 25×100, 47×200 and other formats is in high demand on this market. Lately the products designed for the Egyptian market have been absorbed by China, and Egyptian companies had difficult times in ensuring supplies. Probably this explains the sharp rise in imports from Sweden.
Base export prices for Russian sawn timber on various terms are listed in the Russian Timber Journal, a regular digital publication of WhatWood analytic agency. The price section occupies around 25 pages of the journal, the full list of price tables and charts is available at the agency’s website.
