Russian timber harvest increased by 3.7% in 2021
Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz) published timber harvesting data for all regions of the Russian Federation for 2021. At year-end, timber harvested in Russia increased by 3.7% YoY and totaled 225 million m³.
The Kostroma region has been remaining the timber harvesting leader in the Central Federal District since 2016: it increased the indicator by 16.9% YoY to 6.5 million m³ in 2021. The Moscow region has been reducing the timber harvest for the fourth year in a row: if it harvested almost 1 million m³ of timber in 2018, then this figure totaled only 376,000 m³ in 2021 (-14.3 YoY). The maximum growth in the Central Federal District in 2021 was obtained by the Tver region: +35.2% YoY to 1.9 million m³.
The top three leaders of the Northwestern Federal District in terms of timber harvest for the reporting period remained unchanged: Vologda region (18.1 million m³), Arkhangelsk region (16.1 million m³), Komi Republic (9.7 million m³). The maximum growth in the said federal district was achieved by the Novgorod region: +19.6% to 2.9 million m³. Volga Federal District increased timber harvesting figures by 2.4% YoY to 32.1 million m³. There was a slight decline in the Ural Federal District: -0.9% YoY to 14.9 million m³. The Far Eastern Federal District reduced the volume of timber harvest as well: -5% to 17.5 million m³.
The timber harvest of the Irkutsk region, the country’s most forested region, increased by 7.4% YoY to 32.7 million m³. The Krasnoyarsk region, the country’s second-largest region in terms of timber harvesting, lowered the figure by 2.4% YoY to 24.7 million m³.
