Russian producers of wood-based biofuel are shifting their focus to wood briquettes

According to a quick-look estimate by the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), wood pellet production in Russia dropped by 16.4% YoY in H1 2024, down to 549,200 t. The greatest amount was produced in the Far Eastern Federal District: 166,100 t (+0.1 YoY). The output reduced considerably in the Siberian and Volga Federal Districts—by 46.5% YoY and 21.8% YoY, respectively. On the other hand, the production grew in the Ural (+33.6% YoY), Northwestern (+11.7% YoY), and Central (+8.9% YoY) Federal Districts. The wood pellet production in the Southern Federal District was extremely small in H1 2024.

At the same time, the production of wood briquettes surged by 18.4% YoY in H1 2024, up to 102,000 t, according to Rosstat. The greatest production volumes were recorded in the Northwestern (39,000 t; +33.9% YoY), Volga (32,800 t; +33.7% YoY), and Central (21,800 t; +0.2% YoY) Federal Districts.
