The volume of timber harvesting in the Kostroma region reached a 30-year high

11 February 2019 ` 14:00

In the Kostroma region in 2018 harvested 5.9 million cubic meters of wood. Such volumes of harvesting recorded for the first time in the last 30 years, according to the Department of Forestry.

In 2018, the enterprises of the Kostroma region harvested 5.9 million cubic meters of wood, which is 33% more than in 2012 and the largest figure since 1989.

The increase in the volume of harvested wood contributed to the active development of rental relations in the region, a high level of demand for timber processing enterprises, and favorable weather conditions during the winter harvesting in 2018.
So, if in 2012 337 tenants were engaged in timber harvesting, at the beginning of 2019 – 375, the number of lease agreements increased from 452 to 493. The area of forest plots leased during these 6 years increased by 40% – from 1.98 million hectares as of January 1, 2013, to 2.8 million hectares as of January 1, 2019.

The modernization of timber processing industries in the region also contributes to the increase in the volume of logging. Only in 2018, the new production lines, which allowed to increase the volume of production and product quality, were launched at two plywood mills of the SVEZA Group in Manturovo (peeling line) and Kostroma (spindle peeling line, the launch of a modernized lamination press). During the same period, the area of reforestation activities in the region increased from 11.7 thousand hectares to 20.5 thousand hectares, an increase of 75%.

In 2019 scheduled works on reforestation in an area of no less than 23 thousand hectares, the Regional forestry Department performs daily monitoring of tenants compliance with lease terms of forests, including work on conservation, protection, and reforestation. All tenants of forest plots fulfill their obligations on the leased forest plots.

As a result, in the ranking of regions on average annual growth rates of reforestation (from 2008 to 2017) Kostroma region is among the top thirty.
In the Forest plan of Kostroma region on 2019-2028 years, laid down the requirement one hundred percent of the reforestation of forest land coming from the clear-cutting by 2024, which in turn meets the requirements of the Federal project “forest Conservation” within the framework of the national project “Ecology”.
