Segezha Group expanded its reforestation area by 20% in 2021

Segezha Group restored 34,835 ha of forest lands. The reforestation projects have been approved by the governing authorities. Thus, between May and November 2021, Segezha Group restored forests in Krasnoyarsk Krai (15,800 ha), Karelia Republic (8,200 ha), Vologda (5,100 ha), Arkhangelsk (4,300 ha), and Kirov (1,300 ha) Regions.

“This is a nearly 20% increase over the 2020 figures. We spent over RUB 140 million on reforestation projects in 2021. The Group restores 100% of the forest harvested in the previous year.

This April, we will plant the first seeds at our tree nursery in Kostroma Region. We will produce ball-rooted seedlings in-house to fully satisfy the demand of our reforestation operations in European Russia. Investments in this project are more than RUB 70 million. The planned production volume is 4 million seedlings per year.

Expanding the reforestation area is among our perspective climate change projects as well. To successfully implement them, we need the corresponding Russian legislation being approved and brought into force, as well as being harmonized with international verification and validation requirements. I believe such projects would make a significant contribution to carbon dioxide absorption and greenhouse gas reduction nationwide”, noted Mikhail Shamolin, President of Segezha Group.
