Scientists of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M. V. Lomonosov are working on the creation of “stone wood”
The staff of the Department of composite materials and construction ecology of NARFU work on colloidal-chemical aspects of creating an environmentally friendly material with good sound and thermal insulation properties, resistant to fire and temperature changes. This was reported by the press service of the University.
The technology of manufacturing this composite is based on the fact that under certain conditions the mineral component — quartz, basalt or granite — replaces the plant matrix, copying its structure. The main task of the project “Colloid-chemical aspects of technology for producing innovative building materials by mineralization of wood matrix” is to combine the best properties of stone and wood in one material. Now for this scientists are conducting a series of exploratory experiments.
Production of such material can become a stage of creation of waste-free production, using unclaimed remains from woodworking and construction.
“It can be argued that the process of creating “stone wood” we to some extent copy from nature. In natural conditions, such processes occur for centuries, and we are confident that we can speed them up with the help of certain chemical compounds and regime parameters. More detailed information is not yet possible to provide, as it is expected to obtain a number of patents”, – said the Scientific Director of the project doctor of chemical Sciences Professor Arkady Eisenstadt.
