Federal Forestry Agency: the total timber resources in Russia exceed 102 billion m³, and the timber harvested in 2020 totaled 220 million m³
The total timber resources in our country are estimated at 102.2 billion m³. Such data were obtained from the results of the first cycle of the state forest inventory. The AAC, i.e. the volume of timber that is allowed to be harvested annually to ensure inexhaustibility of forests, totals on average less than 1% of the total resources. The volume of timber actually harvested in 2020 totaled approximately 220 million m³.
The first cycle of the state forest inventory in Russia lasted since 2007 and was completed in 2020. The inventory covered 85 regions of the country and the entire forest area (1,187.6 million ha), including forest fund lands, specially protected sites, military land, areas of settlements, and other categories of land.
The second cycle of the inventory begins in 2021. Thus, it will be calculated for the second time how many forests there are in Russia, what is their age, what tree species prevail in particular areas, and data will be updated on soils, shrubs, food and medicinal resources, etc.
The repeated inventory will allow tracking changes in the dynamics of the forests; the second cycle will cover all regions of the country and will last for 10 years. For 2021, it is scheduled to work in 18 regions with a total area of 100 million ha.
