UPM and Carbodeon develop cellulose and nanodiamond materials for 3D printing
UPM and Carbodeon are developing cellulose-and nanodiamond-reinforced raw materials for 3D printing. Nanodiamond additives provide the product not only with improved stiffness and strength but also with a higher temperature of thermal deviation. New items will be available for the manufacture of fused granulate (FGF), and for the manufacture of the fused filament (FFF). About it reports a press-service of UPM.
“Our goal is to create a sustainable alternative to biocomposites in the field of technical polymers with short-filling. UPM Formi grades are 100% recyclable and meet the requirements of FSC and PEFC certification,” says Eve Saarikoski, application Manager for UPM biocomposites. – “By combining the technologies of nanodiamonds and cellulose fibers, we can obtain the composition of natural fibers, which has a high fluidity of the melt than standard plastic.”
The combination of technologies opens up new possibilities for the use of three-dimensional filaments and large-scale production of granular-based additives. By 2020, the 3D materials market is estimated at $5 billion.
Carbodeon Ltd Oy develops, manufactures and supplies nanodiamond additives for a variety of industrial applications. In 2018, the company also presented its own product for 3D printing thread based on nanoscale diamond. All Carbodeon products are sold under the uDiamond brand.
