Lumber Report No.1 (17): stunning growth of lumber exports to China, new production leader and restoration of prices

Read in the latest issue of the monthly review of the Russian sawmilling industry WhatWood Russian Monthly Lumber Report No.1 (17) – January 2017:

  • The volume of export of sawn softwood products from Russia increased by 11% up to 24.8 million m3 (+ 2.4 million m3) in 2016.
  • High demand for Russian sawn softwood products in China has resulted in dramatic growth of the volume of export from Russia: +37% (compared to the previous year). At the same time, the volume of sales of our main competitors from Canada has decreased (-6% compared to the previous year); their products have gone primarily to the increasing American house building market. Now, Russia is the main supplier of sawn wood for woodworking, furniture and building industry sectors of China, though as early as 2012, the volume distribution between Russia and Canada was 50/50. In 2016, volume of exports of the Northern European countries – Sweden and Finland which push forward their products on the Chinese market according to the national support programs – significantly increased.
  • The new leader on the Russian sawmilling market: Segezha Group has become the largest Russian exporter of sawn wood after the purchase of Lesosibirsky LDK No.1.
  • After reaching the bottom in the middle 2016, prices for sawn wood had been increasing until the end of the year following the strengthening of the Russian currency against the US dollar… [More details after subscribing]
